Clarissa James (RSW, MSW, BSW, BA) is a compassionate and client-centered therapist specializing in the treatment of chronic pain for adults and youth (ages 12+). Clarissa is a Pain Reprocessing Therapy Practitioner who has been certified by the Pain Reprocessing Therapy Center in PRT.

Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is a scientifically supported, mind-body approach designed to treat chronic pain that originates from the brain and nervous system rather than from ongoing tissue damage or structural injury. This kind of pain is often referred to as neuroplastic pain. The pain is real, but it’s generated by the brain due to a hypersensitive or misfiring pain system. PRT helps clients retrain the brain to interpret bodily signals more accurately and reduce the threat response that fuels chronic pain. This is done through education, somatic (body-based) awareness, and emotional processing.

Neuroplastic pain is very common—far more than most people realize. Research suggests that a large percentage of chronic pain cases are neuroplastic in nature, meaning the pain is real, but it is generated or amplified by the brain and nervous system rather than ongoing physical injury or tissue damage. Some common types of neuroplastic pain that can be treated with PRT include; chronic back pain, chronic neck pain, fibromyalgia, headache disorders and migraines, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), pelvic pain, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) , sciatica (without significant structural cause), and tinnitus.

PRT is not a replacement for medical care when there is clear tissue damage or an active medical condition, but it can be an essential tool when pain persists beyond normal healing time, or when no clear medical cause can be found. Clarissa is thankful to work alongside a wonderful team of medical professionals at Cobblestone Medicine and Rehab that make coordinating care for a clients and wrapping around care a top priority.

Clarissa herself experienced her own personal journey with chronic migraine which she has been able to successfully treat utilizing PRT. Her own personal healing journey from chronic pain inspired her to want to specialize in treating chronic pain.

With a deep commitment to helping individuals reclaim their lives, Clarissa integrates cutting-edge mind-body approaches with a warm, relational style rooted in empathy and collaboration.

In addition to her work with chronic pain, Clarissa brings expertise in supporting adults and adolescents (ages 12+) navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction. As well as caregivers and family members of individuals experiencing addiction. Her approach is strengths-based, honouring each client's inherent resilience and capacity for growth. By creating a safe, nonjudgmental space, Clarissa empowers people to explore their experiences, build emotional insight, and develop skills for lasting well-being.

Drawing on evidence-based practices and a deep respect for each individual’s unique story, Clarissa is dedicated to helping people move toward healing, self-awareness, and a more fulfilling life.

I’m glad you’re here—seeking support is a brave and powerful step. Life’s journey can be overwhelming, and you don’t have to walk it alone. As a psychotherapist who combines clinical training with lived experience, I bring deep empathy to our work together.
My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that healing is possible with the right support. I work with people who have been impacted by trauma, struggle with anxiety, depression, and low self worth, are navigating relationship challenges or life changes, and are looking to develop healthier coping skills.
With a passion for mindfulness, acceptance, and self-compassion, I utilize interventions that foster a healthier, more optimistic outlook and resilience in the face of adversity. I’m a big believer in the mind-body connection, and I integrate tools that address both cognitive and emotional patterns, as well as somatic and body-based practices.
I hold two master’s-level degrees, along with certifications in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Emotion Freedom Technique, Polyvagal Theory, Schema Therapy, and several attachment- and trauma-informed modalities. I also have SMART Recovery Facilitator Training which is aimed at supporting clients in achieving substance use–related goals.
I take an eclectic, person-centered approach—drawing from a variety of evidence-based tools to meet each client where they’re at. Above all, I believe that a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship is the foundation for meaningful change. Feel free to reach out for a free consultation—I look forward to connecting with you.

Do you have difficult feelings that come from anxiety or depression and make your days harder? Do you have to make choices that seem scary or overwhelming? Are things changing in your life that you don't have control over? Do bottled up feelings effect the way you get along with others? Are you looking to find ways to be your best self? There are lots of ways to get through this; I can help you find the best way that fits with your outlook in life.

I have spent 20+ years working in mental health, becoming a psychotherapist was a natural next step for me because, through my experience and education, I have learned a lot about coping strategies that work, recognizing triggers that cause bad feelings, and what can be done about those bad feelings once they come.

Together we can look at ways to make symptoms of mental health a little bit easier to deal with, to make hard choices a little bit easier to make, and to regulate feelings that might seem out of control.
